What parent wants to hand their teen a bloody tale when they thought it was a clean young adult thriller? But in all honesty, it’s really hard to find clean and fabulous YA thrillers. Too often I find myself faced with gothic horror content, excess profanity, and blood running off the pages of what should have been a “clean Christian book”.
Toning down the gore doesn’t mean flattening the stakes and characters to Goldilocks-and-the-Three-Bears kind of drama. What it does mean is looking past the genre’s stereotypes to find books and authors who are skilled enough to write suspenseful young adult thrillers without a gory copout.
Below are five YA thriller series written by four different authors whose writing I absolutely love. Every single series includes a complete list of Noteworthy Elements (view in The Library) for parents to read and determine whether this series is one they want their teenager reading.
