Synopsis: Ever since his dad died when he was twelve, Drew Carter has wanted nothing but a normal life. When an accident during a physics experiment at college leaves him blind, and one of his best friends missing, Drew is certain that normalcy can never be reached. But as his sight begins to miraculously come back, Drew is faced with the reality that he can see into another dimension. As a battle wages, visible to him and hidden to others, Drew is forced to maintain his sanity while trying to prove to others that this battle has the power to affect the fate of America, and the whole world.

Notes from The Radical Reader:

  • Noble Characters: Drew Carter is a typical teenager with hopes, dreams, and a cold grip on reality. When his dad dies, Drew is forced to grow up quickly. And nothing can convince him that there’s something else out there, something beyond him. That is, until an accident during a physics experiment eventually allows him to see into the spiritual realm.
  • Captivating Plots: Burdened with knowing that a battle exists, invisible to the outside world, Drew’s special knack for seeing problems and controversies arise before they even happen lands him directly in the hands of the CIA. As the series progresses, Drew must fight to protect his own life, and the fate of America, before the supernatural war threatens to destroy his sanity.
  • Elaborate Worlds: Drew has only every known America (and the world, for that matter) as a place where tragic events happen, dreaded life circumstances cannot be fixed, and pain and despair haunt every decision. But when his eyes are opened to the battle beyond his world, Drew finds himself aware of a supernatural world and a supernatural battle that has been existing for thousands of years. And he has a part to play in that fight.

Noteworthy Elements:

  • Spiritual: Much of the story is centered around Drew’s discovery of the spiritual realm and his response to it. While author, Chuck Black, takes creative liberties with his depictions of angels and Biblical events, he strives to stay closely to the facts Scripture has given and uphold the truth of Christ in his books. Still, he depicts angels and demons with creative license in a way that may disturb some readers.
  • Other: There is one reference of the expression “you’re going to get your butt whipped” by another football player at Drew’s school who feels threatened by Drew’s presence. There is no crude language or vulgar jesting elsewhere in the books.
