A branch of a pine tree, celebrating the coming of March and of the Librarian's Choice books.

The Librarian’s Choice: March 2025

For people in the north (like me), spring is still a few months off and the snow will be staying around for a few more weeks. As we look forward to the exploits of the summer, the Librarian’s Choice books are centered around heroic adventures! From a favorite author like J. R. R. Tolkien, to lesser known authors like Andrew Peterson and Joanne Williamson, some of our favorite stories are of bravery, heroism, and adventurous journeys. These tales are no exception!

Ages 8-11: The Wingfeather Saga

For Janner Igiby, life has been dull and unadventurous. But when he learns that his mother and grandfather have been hiding more than the secret of his father’s name, Janner is thrust into a battle of life and death, mystery and intrigue, and a journey of grief and glory. From Andrew Peterson, a singer, songwriter, and poet, the Wingfeather Saga is an incredible and timeless tale of heroism, adventure, and faith in the Maker. It’s a hilarious read-aloud for the whole family and perfect for even older ages!

Ages 12-14: Hittite Warrior

Uriah-Tarhund’s life as the son of a Hittite lord was uneventful until the day his parents and sister were murdered, and he was forced to survive on his own. As Uriah travels from Tyre to Meggido to Sidon and Kedesh, he encounters Deborah the prophetess, Barak the warrior, and their enemy, Sisera of Harosheth. Joanne Williamson, an author of historical fiction novels for children, has spun a tale of heroism and courage across the historical setting of Israel in 1200 BC. If you’re looking for a fast-paced adventure for boys and girls alike, this is a great choice!

Ages 15+: The Hobbit

Who doesn’t love the tale of the comfort-loving Bilbo Baggins who was convinced to embark on an adventure with a wizard and a group of dwarves? From the timeless author, J. R. R. Tolkien, comes the precursor to the Lord of the Rings series. Though I recommend it for 15+ due to complex language and themes, children much younger can adore this tale! Perfect for reading aloud to all ages, The Hobbit will transfix readers with it’s spell-binding adventures, heroic themes, and lovable characters. You won’t be disappointed by this story!
