Summary: Ebenezer Scrooge is a mean, cruel, and miserly old man who hates Christmas and everything related to it. But when he is visited by the spirit of his dead business partner, Jacob Marley, and three Ghosts on Christmas Eve, he is forced to face his cruelty before the future is irreversible and his fate determined.
Notes From the Radical Reader:
- Noble Characters: Ebenezer Scrooge is far from what you might except a hero to be. He denies money to the poor, doesn’t like Christmas parties, and spends all his days in a countinghouse hoarding his money. But he doesn’t flaunt his wealth; he just uses it to make himself more miserable. As the story progresses, we see Scrooge begin to realize the futility of money and the power of kindness and love, eventually culminating in his decision to save Tiny Tim’s life.
- Captivating Plots: If you’ve never read anything by Charles Dickens, then prepare to be enchanted. In his struggle between pride and love, stinginess, and generosity, Scrooge’s journey will take him to the past, present, and future as he fights to amend the life he may have to endure.
- Elaborate Worlds: Set in London, England during the early 1840s, Dickens has crafted a world where the rich are isolated from the poor, where work is unavailable for those who want it, and where love can save a child’s life. I highly recommend this story!
