The Librarian’s Choice: January 2025

The snow outside is showing no signs of melting, and we are expecting winter to last for several more months here at my house. Now is the perfect time to cuddle up with hot chocolate, a fuzzy blanket, and some books from The Librarian’s Choice. Enjoy these wintery tales that we are highlighting this month!

Ages 8-11: Snow Treasure

WWII, nine million dollars of gold, and kids with sleds. Pair these together and you have the book, Snow Treasure, by Marie McSwigan. Set in Norway during the beginning of the Second World War, this story chronicles the legend of the escape of Norway’s gold, brought by kids on sleds out of the country. Though written in language for younger kids, I highly recommend it for any age. McSwigan’s characters, world, and plot are both historically fascinating and captivating!

Ages 12-14: Treasures of the Snow

This classic novel was made into a movie in 1983, and though I can’t speak for the movie, I highly recommend the book. Patricia St. John has written quite a few favorites of mine, and her novel, Treasures of the Snow, is an intricate blending of heartache, revenge, and redemption. Follow the story of Annette’s bitterness, Dani’s injury, and Lucien’s guilt in this enchanting novel.

Ages 15+: The Blue Castle

If you have ever heard of L. M. Montgomery, then it is probably in the context of her novel-turned-popular-movie Anne of Green Gables. But this woman has written quite a few other novels, and one of my favorites is The Blue Castle. Follow the story of another lonely girl and her search for love and belonging. Valancy Stirling is unwanted, unloved, and dying. When she learns that she has a fatal heart disease that will kill her in less than a year, she decides to abandon her dull home and search for adventure. As the precious months of her life tick past, Valancy finds herself falling in love, and only love can save her life.
